Arsenal lost against new Premier League boys Sheffield United on Monday night in an encounter marred with continuation of VAR mistakes. Many are now questioning the role of VAR where clear cut decision could not be made. In the Arsenal News Sokratis was clearly fouled in the box with a pull on his shirt.
There was also a feeling that the referee made decision against the Gunners one being Bukayo Saka simulation. I think he was fouled though very soft. Maybe he didn’t deserved a booking.
Other question were about Emery selection. Many Arsenal fan now think enough is enough for Unai. His decision to bench Ceballos and completely leaving Ozil out of matchday squad were questionable. Many arsenal fan also call for Granit Xhaka as well as Luiz to be dropped, Xhaka has been in the Arsenal first Eleven throughout Emery’s time in the North London despite his poor defending and level of concentration.
Credit though goes to the Sheffield who defended with a lot of discipline and determination throughout the game. They pushed and they got may corners and they were very good in set pieces and ultimately they got their winning goal.
How did you feel about the result?
“Yes, very disappointed with that result. I think we created more chances than them, and the best chances.
“We conceded more corners from them and we wanted and in one corner they scored. When they are pushing and they are taking a lot of corners, they can do that.
“We created chances and one for example is very clear, the penalty on Sokratis. I think the VAR is for this reason, to use in an action like that. I think it was very clear.
How did you feel the game panned out?
“And then also the chance for us, for Pepe, was the key I think.
“If they score the first goal then defensively they are a very strong team.
“I think we deserved more. We did not deserve to lose that match but I appreciate their work and I appreciate their job and they are here with their supporters. With 1-0 they felt strong to achieve that result.
What was your view on VAR tonight?
“I was on the bench and I saw it perfectly.
“He won the timing of the header and for me it was a clear penalty. I think the VAR is for this reason. My point of view is to review it and, after that, decide. We need also to help the referees. The reason for VAR is this.”
What happened with Freddie Ljungberg?
“Yes, he was speaking with the assistant referee and they decided to give him a yellow.”
Are the same problems cropping up?
“Tonight the match, in 90 minutes I think we controlled the game.
“More possession, more chances, more shots. Pepe is improving and I think his way is little by little getting better. The next step is to score.
“Tonight for example, the best chances usually he is going to score chances like that. He is improving, he is helping and taking confidence for us.
“We need to keep [positive] for the next game against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Really now the table is very close, there are a lot of teams in that position we are in now and we know we lost a good opportunity to be in third position in the table. But we are going to work for our opportunity on Sunday.”
Do you know your best starting eleven?
“Really, my point of view tonight is that there are things to analyse and improve.
“Defensively at the beginning of the match they pushed and we didn’t stop them. We didn’t concede a lot of chances, but they had corners offensively and they can score from these corners.
“We had more than them, but we know they are a strong team in that situation and they use it to win matches. In other situations throughout the 90 minutes I think we controlled it in moments to create more chants. We didn’t score tonight, but if we played another match like tonight, I think it’s more easy to achieve the points.”
